Register your publishing works

Add musical works in HILLS Music Publishing: writers, publishers, IPI numbers, societies, shares and ISWCs, linked to recordings and exported as MWN.

Updated

Behind every recording is a musical work: the composition, owned by its songwriters and publishers. Publishing in HILLS Music keeps your works in one place, with their writers, publishers, shares and ISWCs, linked to the recordings of them, so they can be registered with collecting societies and other recipients.

Open Catalog → Releases → Publishing (artists and labels see Publishing in their Catalog menu).

Works made from your releases

When you credit songwriters on a release’s tracks (composer, lyricist), the composition is recorded too, so many of your works start from your releases. Open one to complete it. Once you edit a work in Publishing, its writers and publishers are managed there and release saves no longer change them.

Make a new work

  1. Choose New work.
  2. Enter the Title. Partners pick the account the work belongs to: the artist, label or partner.
  3. The work is created as a draft. Fill in its tabs; every field saves itself.

The work

  • Title and Language of the title.
  • Alternative titles, if the work is known by others: an alternative, a translation, the original or a formal title.
  • ISWC: T followed by 10 digits, such as T0345246801. Leave it empty until the society assigns one.
  • Work code: HILLS Music’s own ID for the work, sent with the ISWC.
  • Territories of control: where you control the work.

Writers and publishers

Add who wrote the music and words, and, optionally, who publishes or administers the work.

Roles
Writers Composer, Lyricist, Composer and lyricist, Arranger, Adapter, Translator
Publishers Original publisher, Sub-publisher, Administrator

For each one, add their IPI name number and their Society (for example ASCAP, BMI, PRS for Music, GEMA, SACEM, JASRAC, KOMCA, VCPMC, or Not affiliated), and the Mechanical society where it differs.

Tick Controlled for each writer or publisher whose share HILLS Music or your catalog administers. A controlled party needs an IPI.

Writers and publishers are saved once and reused across your catalog. Renaming one changes the name on every work and release that credits them.

Shares

Give each party its share for each right: Performance, Mechanical and Sync. Writers and publishers together must total 100% per right. Use performance shares for all rights copies them across if they’re the same.

Recordings

Link the recordings of the work by searching their title, artist or ISRC. A linked recording takes its writers from this work.

Statuses

Status What it means
Draft Being filled in; shares can be incomplete
Ready Complete and ready to register
Registered Registered with the recipient
Conflict Another party claims a share that conflicts
Withdrawn No longer registered

A work can only be Ready, Registered or exported once its checklist is empty: a title, a language, at least one writer, roles, societies, IPIs of controlled parties, and 100% per right.

Export as DDEX MWN

Partners and direct accounts can export a complete work as a DDEX MWN 1.0 message, the standard format for notifying works to societies and other recipients:

  1. Open the work and go to its export.
  2. Pick the Recipient (for example The MLC), or choose Someone else and enter its name and DDEX Party ID.
  3. Choose Check against the schema if you like, then Download MWN XML.

It’s sent as a test message unless you tick Live message.

Artists and labels under a partner don’t export MWN: their partner does. Where the partner makes the releases for its artists, it also edits their works, and the artists can view them.

Common questions

What's the difference between a recording and a work?
A recording (ISRC) is one performance of a song. The work (ISWC) is the composition itself: its music and words, owned by its writers and publishers. One work can have many recordings.
What is an IPI number?
The IPI name number identifies a writer or publisher at the collecting societies. It's up to 11 digits, like 00052210040, and your society gives it to you.
Do I need an ISWC to start?
No. Leave it empty until your society assigns one, then add it to the work.
