Pitch your release to editors
Write the editorial pitch on a release's Marketing tab: focus track, story, genres, moods and markets, a marketing plan, and when pitching opens.
Updated
Every release has a Marketing tab in the editor, between Territories and Review. It holds the editorial pitch that our marketing team takes to the stores’ editors, a marketing plan, your links and press files, and the store descriptions sent with the release.
Nothing on the tab is required. Leave it empty and the release goes out as usual. Once you start a pitch, the fields marked * are needed for it to be complete.
When you can pitch
- The pitch, plan and links open once the release is delivered to stores. That’s when it has its UPC, its ISRCs and its store links to pitch with. Before that the tab shows Pitching opens once the release is delivered to stores.
- You can update them until the release date. The tab tells you the last day. After it, the release date has passed and they can’t be changed any more.
Spotify only takes editorial pitches for unreleased music, at least 7 days before release, and earlier pitches get more consideration. That’s why we recommend submitting a release at least two weeks before release day, and four weeks for a priority release. See Planning your release date.
Write the editorial pitch
Open the release, go to the Marketing tab and open Editorial pitch. Every field saves itself as you type.
| Field | What to put |
|---|---|
| Focus track * | The one track to pitch. Only asked when the release has more than one track. |
| Pitch * | At least 50 characters, at most 500: the song’s story, how it was made, what’s planned around it. |
| Genres and styles * | Up to 5, more precise than the genre (for example city pop, synthwave). |
| Culture, language or scene | Where it comes from, who it speaks to. |
| Moods * | Pick from the list: Chill, Dreamy, Energetic, Melancholic and others. |
| Main instruments | Pick from the list. |
| Similar artists | Three to five artists your listeners also play. |
| Priority markets * | Up to 10 countries to push first. |
If a started pitch is missing something, the tab names what it still needs. An incomplete pitch never holds the release back, but editors may pass over it.
Add a marketing plan
Under Marketing plan:
- Priority * — Standard, Priority or Focus (your lead release this season).
- Planned ad budget — total paid media, if any, with its currency.
- Activities — Press, Radio, Playlist pitching, Paid ads, TikTok / short video, Tour / live shows, Music video premiere, Influencers.
- Key dates — up to 10: teasers, the video premiere, shows. Each has a date and what happens.
Links and press
Under Links and press, add the artist’s Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Facebook, X and website, and pick the Smartlink or pre-save to share in posts and ads (see Smart links and pre-save).
Add press photos (JPEG or PNG, at least 1000 px on the short side, up to 20 MB) and an EPK as a PDF (up to 20 MB), 10 files at most.
Store descriptions
Store descriptions are different: they’re delivered to the stores with the release, so they lock once the release is submitted. Fill them in before you submit.
- Marketing comment — for the stores’ editors, not shown to listeners.
- Synopsis — what it’s about, in a few sentences (mainly for videos and long-form).
- Keywords — up to 20 search terms, not artist names.
After you pitch
Our marketing team sends the pitch and records where it stands. Under the form you’ll see the pitch status: Pitched once it’s gone to the editors, Placed if it lands a placement.
To start again, choose Remove pitch. The editorial pitch and marketing plan are cleared; links, press files and store descriptions stay.
Priority releases can also get a release plan, pre-save campaigns and paid ads with our team. Ask your partner manager.
Common questions
- Why is the Marketing tab locked?
- Pitching opens once the release is delivered to stores, when it has its UPC, ISRCs and store links to pitch with. Until then the tab says so and the pitch can't be written.
- How long is the pitch?
- Between 50 and 500 characters, the same length Spotify allows: the song's story, how it was made and what's planned around it.
- Does HILLS guarantee a playlist placement?
- No. Nobody can honestly guarantee editorial placements. The pitch puts the release in front of the editors on time; the pitch status shows Pitched once it's sent and Placed if it lands.
- Until when can I change the pitch?
- Until the release date. After that the tab says the release date has passed, and the pitch, plan and links can't be changed any more.
