Release a ringtone
Turn the hook of a track into a ringtone on the iTunes Store with HILLS Music: what to send our team, which moment to pick, and the rights you need.
Updated
A ringtone is a short clip of one of your tracks, sold as a tone on the iTunes Store and linked to the original track. It’s a simple way to earn more from a hook fans already know.
Ringtones aren’t created in the release editor. The HILLS team handles them for you: you choose the moment, we cut the clip and deliver it.
What to send us
Write to us from Live support, or ask your partner manager, with:
- The track. Ideally a track already live through HILLS Music, so the tone can be linked to it. Give its title and ISRC.
- The moment. Where the clip should start, in minutes and seconds (for example 1:02), and whether you want the hook, the chorus or the intro.
- The rights. Confirm you hold the rights to the recording and to its composition for the clip.
- The date. When the ringtone should go on sale.
How we make it
- We cut a 20 to 30 second clip from your master, starting at the moment you chose.
- It’s delivered to the iTunes Store as a tone, linked to the original track.
- Our team checks the rights and the clip before it’s delivered, as with any release.
Pick a good moment
- The part people recognise straight away: the hook or the start of the chorus.
- A clean start: on the beat, not in the middle of a word.
- Something that works on repeat, since a ringtone loops.
If you’ve already set a Short-video clip start for the track (the moment TikTok, Reels and Shorts start from), it’s often a good choice for the ringtone too. See TikTok, Reels and Shorts.
Timing and earnings
Allow the same lead time as a release: send us the request at least two weeks before the ringtone should go on sale. Ringtone sales are reported with the rest of your catalog in your monthly statements. See Reading your statement.
